#StandWithCongo campaign director and recent Music Beyond Award honoree JD Stier is an activist, filmmaker, and community organizer. A frequent contributor to Politico and The Huffington Post and a recurring guest on MSNBC, JD has held leadership positions with numerous social and electoral campaigns. His role in Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign led to a White House appointment in 2009, during which JD worked to address mass incarceration in the US.

After his time at the White House, JD led the Enough Project’s Congo Campaign. Under his leadership, the campaign pressured technology industry leaders to address conflict minerals; was cited as the difference-maker in creating the Office of the US Special Envoy to Africa’s Great Lakes; and led the production of the documentary series I Am Congo.

In 2014, JD teamed up with colleagues and founded Stier Forward, an organization that partners with foundations, civil society leaders, philanthropists, and private sector innovators to support and spearhead films, campaigns, media, and community engagement efforts. Among the films JD has produced with Stier Forward are the feature-length documentaries When Elephants Fight and Merci Congo. Stier Forward launched its flagship #StandWithCongo campaign in 2016, and its film-driven US mass incarceration campaign, Mass Inc., launches in 2018.

Music Beyond had the chance to speak with JD about his experiences with Music Beyond and the ways in which our message and mission continue to inspire him in his work as an activist in Congo and beyond.

Music Beyond: How did you first become involved with Music Beyond?

JD Stier: I started reading about Music Beyond online when founder and president Kaori Fujii reached out to me last May after hearing about my work with #StandWithCongo. My first reaction was, “Wow, this is different.” You just don’t see people doing what Music Beyond is doing. So many of the headlines you read about Congo are stigma-creating, dehumanizing, and disempowering, and Music Beyond’s work in Congo doesn’t fit the media’s vision of Congo as a place of death, despair, war, greed, and corruption. Music Beyond is about a group of musicians in New York banding together with a symphony orchestra in Kinshasa and creating a whole lot of love and humanity.

MB: Why do you believe that Music Beyond’s mission to empower individuals through music and outreach in developing countries like Congo is important and relevant in today’s world?

JD: Music Beyond is more important than ever, in part, because of the effects of exploitative foreign engagement, from disempowering media narratives to outdated NGO models. Music Beyond is dedicated to working directly with culture creators and community leaders in Congo, providing resources, access, networks, and skills-based knowledge transfer initiatives that strengthen, embolden, and empower Congo’s top musicians to become better teachers and more effective culture creators. It’s so important to do this kind of work in places like Congo where politics, bad business, and the media have had the effect of largely shutting the world out of Congo’s beauty and culture.

MB: Do you have a favorite memory from one of your interactions with Music Beyond?

JD: Music Beyond premiered a video about its All-Female Chamber Ensemble at its gala this past May, and to hear the women in Kinshasa speaking about the impact the ensemble has had on them really struck me and everyone in the room. By providing women with leadership opportunities in a country where, as the musicians state, many people think a woman’s place is in the kitchen, Music Beyond has rallied with women and men who believe that a woman’s place is onstage. The women’s declarations of empowerment, gender equality, and respect for women in positions of leadership continue to resonate with and move me. This is what Music Beyond has been doing all along: building relationships and trust and empowering individuals through music.

MB: Tell us about your work with #StandWithCongo and how Music Beyond fits into the campaign’s mission.

JD: #StandWithCongo is an inclusive social movement hub. We work with activists, advocates, technology leaders, social innovators, and leaders in the arts to make sure that human stories remain at the center of conversations about Congo. As evidenced by Music Beyond’s video featuring its All-Female Chamber Ensemble, it is essential that Congolese people are the ones creating Congo’s narrative. #StandWithCongo works with leaders in the US and around the world who are focused on the steps that are needed today to secure free and fair elections and increase transparency in the mineral, governance, and security sectors. There’s not enough celebration of the humanities in aspects of our work, and that’s where Music Beyond comes in. Music Beyond is an apolitical celebration of humanity, connecting youth, students, and accomplished musicians within Congo, and connecting musicians in Congo with musicians around the world. There is a spirit of solidarity in sharing music, and it’s an essential piece of what #StandWithCongo aims to do.

MB: What inspires you to continue your work in Congo and with organizations like Music Beyond?

JD: We have only just begun to tap into our potential to be in a collaborative space with a young and dynamic Congolese community. Coming out of decades of oppressive and corrupt regimes, we are nearing a tipping point where I believe the Congolese people are going to be able to chart their own course, and where we’re going to be able to move together as international partners and stakeholders committed to humanity and peace. Music Beyond is one of the few groups active and strengthening deep relationships in Congo, a country that could overflow with international collaboration and cultural export, and I want to be a part of that. I want to be a part of Congo’s bright, dynamic, and vivid future with Music Beyond.

そして2016年、Stier Forwardの旗艦キャンペーン、#StandWithCongoを発足。また2018年には、アメリカにおける刑務所問題に焦点を当て、映画を通して問題解決に立ち向かうキャンペーン、Mass Inc.発足が予定されています。

今回のインタビューではそんなスティア氏に、Music Beyondとの今までの関わりについて、そしてMusic Beyondの活動内容が、コンゴ内外で活動家として活躍するスティア氏にどのような影響をもたらしているかについて、お話を聞きました。

Music Beyond (以下MB): まずはどんなきっかけでMusic Beyondと関わることになったのですか？

JD Stier (以下JD): 昨年5月に、#StandWithCongoでの僕の活動を知ったMusic Beyond代表の藤井香織さんがメッセージをくれたんだ。そこでMusic Beyondについて読み始めた。読んでみてまず最初に思ったことは「Wow! これは今までとは違うぞ！」Music Beyondのような活動をしている団体はとにかく他には存在しない。コンゴのニュースの多くは恥辱を招くもの、非人間的で、僕たちを無力な気持ちにさせるするものばかり。でもMusic Beyondのビジョンはメディアが描くコンゴ — 死、絶望感、戦争、欲、そして汚職まみれのコンゴ — とは全く違う。Music Beyondは、ニューヨーク在住の音楽家がキンシャサの交響楽団と団結して、それはそれはたくさんの愛と人情、思いやりを創り出しているのだから。

MB: 音楽を通してコンゴのような途上国に住む個人個人を力づける、というMusic Beyondの目的が、なぜ今日の世界において大切であり、かつ適切なアプローチだと思うのですか？

JD: コンゴには、搾取的な外国からの影響と、メディアのネガティブな語り口、それから古い感覚のNGOが一部生み出してしまった悪影響があるからこそ、Music Beyondの活動はとても大切なんだ。Music Beyondは、現地の文化クリエイターやコミュニティリーダーたちと直接関わりながら、彼らに手段・機会・ネットワークを与え、コンゴの音楽家をさらにいい教師、さらに効果的な文化クリエイターに育てるために、彼らに勇気と活力を与えている。政治や悪いビジネス、メディアの影響が、コンゴの美しさと文化を世界大多数の人々の目から遮ってしまった今、Music Beyondの活動には計り知れない意味があるんだ。

MB: Music Beyondとの一番の思い出は何ですか？

今年の5月のガラで、Music Beyondが女性室内アンサンブルについてのビデオを上映したんだけど、そのビデオに登場したキンシャサの女性音楽家2人が、このアンサンブルが彼女たちにもたらしている影響を話す姿には本当に心を打たれた。僕にとっても、そして会場にいた全員にとってもね。彼女たちが言うように、居場所は台所だけ、と多くの女性が思ってしまっている国で、敢えて女性にリーダー的存在になる機会を与えることによってMusic Beyondは、女性にも人生の舞台があると信じる女性と男性を集結させることに成功したんだ。社会進出宣言をし、性別平等とリーダー的ポジションを担う女性に対するリスペクトを語るあの彼女たちの話は、心に響いたし、本当に感動したよ。人間関係と信頼関係を深め、音楽を通して個人個人を力づける・・これこそがMusic Beyondがしてきたことなんだよね。

MB: #StandWithCongoについて、それから#StandWithCongoの目的がどのような形でMusic Beyondと繋がっているかについてお話いただけますか？

JD: #StandWithCongoは、インクルーシブ (包括的) な市民社会運動の場。活動家、支持者、テクノロジー業界を担う人々、社会革新家、そして芸術部門のリーダーたちと共に、常に人間のストーリーを中心に置きながら、コンゴついて話す場なんだ。Music Beyondの女性アンサンブルのビデオでも明らかだったように、コンゴ人が自分たち国コンゴの語り口を作り出すことはとても重要なことだよね。#StandWithCongo は現在、コンゴに今必要な公正かつ自由な選挙と、鉱産物取引・政治行政・安全保障分野における更なる透明化に焦点を当てて、アメリカをはじめ世界のリーダーと仕事をしている。この活動は大切だし大きな一歩なんだけど、正直『人間性』という面には少し欠けているんだ。でもそこがまさにMusic Beyondの出番。Music Beyondは政治とは無関係のところで、人間性を祝福し、コンゴ国内で若者や学生と音楽家を繋げ、更にコンゴの音楽家と世界の音楽家を繋げている。そこには音楽を分かち合うことで生まれる団結・連帯精神があるんだ。そしてその『連帯精神』こそ正に#StandWithCongoのモットーであり、目標にしていることなんだ。

MB:コンゴでの活動を続けること、またMusic Beyondのような団体と一緒に積極的に活動していく原動力はどこから生まれているのですか？

JD: 僕たちは今初めて、若く躍動感あふれるコンゴコミュニティと、現実的にコラボレートしていく可能性に触れ始めたところだと思う。何十年にも渡る圧政的で堕落した政権からやっと抜け出す機会が近くまでやってきた今、コンゴ人が、自分たちの人生を自分たちで決められるようになる日も近いと僕は信じている。そして僕たちとコンゴ人が、人間性と平和に専念する国際パートナーとして一緒に前進していける日が来る、とね。Music Beyondは、将来的に、溢れるほどの、国際的なコラボレーションと文化の輩出の可能性のあるコンゴで、国の人々と深い関係を築きながらアクティブに活動している極々数少ない団体の一つだからこそ、僕もその一部として貢献したいんだ。Music Beyondと共に、明るく、ダイナミックで鮮やかなコンゴの将来の一部になりたいと思っているよ。
