Today, Shared Nation launched the endorsement week for its latest tournament on women’s rights and gender justice, for which Music Beyond is a featured project. By creating an account and pledging $3 to become part of the Shared Nation community, you’ll have the opportunity to browse the featured organizations and endorse Music Beyond. At the end of the tournament, the winning organization will receive an unrestricted gift which they will be able to apply directly towards their mission.
Music Beyond’s gift would go towards supporting the women who make up our All-Female Chamber Ensemble. Members of the self-taught Kimbanguist Symphony Orchestra in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the thirteen women who make up the ensemble have been breaking down stereotypes and changing their community since the ensemble’s founding. Funding from the Shared Nation tournament would allow Music Beyond to work with the ensemble more frequently and in-depth, and to address the ensemble’s lack of basic necessities that include quality instruments and teaching staff. These tools will allow the program to expand and provide more opportunities for the women to perform across the Congo and internationally.
Pauleth, a violinist and leader within the ensemble, said that her wish “is to improve the quality of my music in order to defend the image of Congolese and African women throughout the world despite all the problems that surround us (wars, famines, stress, diseases, social injustice, etc.).” Members of the ensemble have said that they feel connected to the world like never before and are carrying their experiences from the ensemble forward into healing their communities. Angel, a flutist, said that she feels “… more powerful. I can see the road ahead and I want to work harder. I want to keep moving forward in this ensemble.”

本日より、女性の権利とジェンダー（性別）平等に焦点を当てた Shared Nation によるトーナメントが始まり、Music Beyondもこのトーナメントに出場しています。Shared Nationアカウントを作り、3ドル寄付することにより Shared Nationのコミュニティの一員になり、女性の権利とジェンダー（性別）平等に焦点を当てた団体の活動リストを見ながら、一番良いと思った団体に票を入れる。(endorse) そして最終的に最多票を得た団体に全ての寄付金が送られる、という仕組みです。Shared Nation は、同じゴールを持つ人々を繋げ、みんなが少しずつサポートすることで、問題認識を広げ、少しずつ共同で世界をよくしていこう、という草の根的な基金で、このトーナメントに参加させていただけることを光栄に思っています。
もし最終的にMusic Beyondが選ばれた場合、集まった資金は全てコンゴ初の女性アンサンブルのために使われます。コンゴ民主共和国の首都、キンシャサに存在する独学のオーケストラ、キンバンギスト交響楽団のメンバーでもある13人の女性たちは、この女性アンサンブルの発足以来、コンゴ人女性の持つ、弱者・犠牲者といったイメージを払拭し、少しずつコミュニティに変革をもたらしています。Shared Nationトーナメントからの寄付金は、このアンサンブルのワークショップの回数を増やし、中身を濃くし、必要な楽器や講師を増やすために使われ、最終的にこのアンサンブルを、音楽家、またロールモデルとして、コンゴのみならず世界に紹介することに繋げられたらと思っています。
このアンサンブルのリーダー的存在、ヴァイオリニストのポレットの願いは、「音楽家としてのクオリティを上げ、戦争・貧困・病気・社会的不平等・・・こんな問題を抱える私たちも、コンゴ人女性・アフリカ人女性としての誇りを持ち、価値ある人間として、アフリカの新しいイメージを世界に広めること。」
女性アンサンブルのメンバーが口々に言うこと、それはこのアンサンブルの発足以来、初めて外の世界と繋がりを感じるということ。そして彼女たちはこのアンサンブルの経験を、コミュニティに癒しをもたらすことに繋げています。フルーティストのエンジェルは、「このアンサンブルを通してうっすら自分の価値が見えてきた。先が見えてきた今、さらに頑張りたい。このアンサンブルと一緒に一歩一歩前進していきたい。」と話してくれました。
