Music Beyond Fourth Annual Gala

On Thursday, June 21, over 90 members of our Music Beyond family gathered at the beautiful and modern Great Jones Studio in Manhattan to celebrate our fourth annual gala. It was a powerful evening uniting for Congo, our musicians, and the future of Music Beyond.

The evening began with cocktails and bidding on the silent auction, featuring a colorful assortment of artwork, handmade items, and tokens from DRC; inviting whiskeys; gift cards to Butter & Scotch and Casa Nela, a collection of European influenced Greenwich Village restaurants; fitness passes to ((305)) Fitness and SoulCycle; and bright artwork from Rifle Paper Co. Guests mingled to the Congolese-inspired beats by DJ Miss Hap, as photographer Duane Lyken snapped their portraits as they entered the room.

We were honored to bestow upon renowned speaker, writer and consultant Gib Bulloch with the Music Beyond Award. Gib was an inspiration for Kaori to start Music Beyond, hearing him speak four and a half years ago. "The power of music is between the notes." he began to open with in his keynote speech. He admired this expression, individuality, and creativity as a common theme in following one's inner voice to use their capabilities in an impactful way. He concluded his speech with many smiles and a rousing applause from the audience, followed by everyone looking to snag a copy of his book that he was donating the proceeds to Music Beyond—and we are thrilled to announce that Gib has joined the advisory board! His influence in both the international business and NGO / nonprofit sectors, along with his warm heart, has already added so much to Music Beyond, and we are delighted to have him as part of our team and leadership.

To think the evening couldn't get any more inspiring, it did. The premiere of the 10-minute Music Beyond documentary was projected on the wall, and there were few dry eyes in the audience watching this inspiring short film. This film will be available puiblicly soon, after its release at several national and international film festivals. Our host for the evening, a veritable force in the support of Congo—JD Stier—brought us back with an exercise closing our eyes: "Close your eyes and picture a life of one of the musicians. Her dream to perform, her drive to shine—not only for herself—but for her family, her children, her nation. You can support her dream today.” His energizing call for support to Music Beyond was met with pledges from $25 to $1,000.

A crowd danced the rest of the night away as we closed out the summer solstice with renewed hope and support for the orchestra and Music Beyond.

6月21日木曜日、90名を超えるMusic Beyondファミリーがマンハッタンのガラ会場、グレイトジョーンズスタジオに集結し、Music Beyondのこれまで4年間を成功を祝い、コンゴ、音楽家、そしてMusic Beyondの将来を願うパワフルな一夜を過ごしました。

DJ Miss Hapが送るコンゴのビートが流れるモダンな会場で、コンゴ直送の手作り工芸品やアクセサリーから、マンハッタンの有名レストランのギフトカード、さらには日本のウイスキーまでが並ぶサイレントオークションに参加しつつ、カクテルと数々のオードブルを手に会話を楽しむゲストたち。そんな楽しく華やかな様子をフォトグラファーDuane Lykenが写真に撮りながら始まったガラ。

今年のMusic Beyond貢献賞受賞者は、有名な講演者、著者、そしてビジネスコンサルタントのギブ・ブロック氏。この日のためだけにスイスからわざわざ渡米した彼を迎えられたことはMusic Beyond全員にとって本当に光栄でした。4年半前にたまたま聞いた彼の講演が、代表藤井香織をMusic Beyond設立に導いた、というほどの影響力を持ち合わせるブロック氏。「音楽のパワーは音と音の間にある、と香織さんが話してくれたことを今でも覚えています。」と言いながら始まった基調講演。ブロック氏はこの表現の意味を、音楽的にだけではなく人間的にも解釈し、「ただ点から点を結びながら、人生をレールの上で過ごすのではなく、点と点の間にある『心の声』に耳を傾けながら、一人ひとりが持つ知識や才能を生かして、みんなで世界を良くしていきましょう。」という趣旨の講演は、たくさんの希望に満ちた笑顔と、割れんばかりの拍手を招きました。講演後は、ブロック氏の著書を購入する列ができ、売り上げはMusic Beyondに寄付されました。

そしてなんと、ブロック氏が顧問としてMusic Beyondに入って下さることが決定しました！世界のビジネスと国際的なNGOや非営利団体にも多くの影響力を持つブロック氏、ノウハウと、同じだけ大きなハートを持ち合わせる彼を迎えられることは、Music Beyondにとってこの上なく大きな前進であり、これから彼のリーダーシップとアドバイスの元、どのように発展していくのか本当に楽しみです。

一夜にこれ以上のインスピレーションはあり得ない、と思っていた矢先、真っ白な壁に映し出されたMusic Beyondの短編ドキュメンタリー映画。上映後は会場中が涙を拭うゲストでいっぱいになりました。現在、国内外の映画祭へのエントリーに向けて準備を始めているこの映画、一般公開まではもうしばらくお待ちください。映画上映後、マイクを取ったのは、この日の司会を務めたコンゴにおける社会人権活動家、JDスティア氏。「皆さん目を閉じてください。目を閉じて、今見た音楽家の一人を思い浮かべてください。そしてその音楽家の夢、希望、そして人生が豊かになっていく様子を思い浮かべてください。・・・目を開けましょう。私たちにはそのパワーがあるのです。Music Beyondを通して、彼らの人生を豊かにするお手伝いができるのです。」

このパワフルなスピーチは、会場中から、25ドルから1000ドルまでの個人寄付の声を呼び込みました。

コンゴの音楽家たちとMusic Beyondへの希望とサポートでいっぱいだった夏至の夜、Music Beyond第4回ガラは、夜な夜な踊り明かしながら幕を閉じました。
