Why bother? Isn't eastern DRC too far gone?

Today, nearly 7 million people are internally displaced across the DRC. Thousands have been killed. Over 80,000 cases of sexual violence against women and girls were recorded in eastern DRC in a recent single nine-month period — more than any other country in active conflict. And this isn’t new — the conflict has lasted for decades.

So what can one small organization possibly change? Fair question.

But here's another: What happens to the people who are still there?

For millions, eastern Congo isn't a crisis on a map — It's home. Their families, histories, and communities are there. Some stay because they have to. Others simply want the chance to build a life where they've always lived.

We don't believe a place has to be fixed before its people are worth investing in. We work for the people who are there.

We're not a humanitarian relief organization, and we're not pretending to solve a conflict this large. Our focus is practical: We create opportunity. For a teacher to learn new skills. For a child to experience music education for the first time. For an artist to become a leader, not just a performer. For young people to create, organize, speak up and contribute to their communities.

Because talent is universal. Opportunity is not.

And behind every number is a person.

This is what we celebrate after 12 years. Not that the crisis is over. It isn't. Not that we've solved everything. We haven't. We celebrate that people keep building anyway.

And this year, keeping that work going matters more than ever.

When Ebola reached communities we serve, Music Beyond postponed our flagship Peace Concert. Not canceled. Postponed. Because our people come before our stage, every time. And we'll be back when it's safe to be loud again.

Our September goal: $20,000

The goal is modest. The work is not.

Here's what different levels of support can help make possible:

$35 — One hour of group music-education training for local elementary school teachers, typically reaching 25-30 teachers at once.
$75 — Support for one artist through our three-month Leadership Program, developing practical skills in public speaking, event organizing, budgeting, proposal writing and advocacy.
$150 — A day of music programming in a refugee camp, reaching up to 100 displaced children.
$300 — A month of music classes at an orphanage — four structured classes for approximately 20 children.
$500 — Durable musical instruments shared across schools and programs, reaching dozens or even hundreds of children over several years.
$750 — A full cohort of artists through our three-month Leadership Program, equipping emerging leaders with practical skills to organize, manage and create change in their communities.
$1,200 — A professional artist development activity, such as recording or performance — supporting artists' livelihoods while giving them a platform to share their work.
$3,000 — A comprehensive music education training program for up to 50 elementary school teachers, with the potential to reach approximately 2,500 children each year.
