As part of our “Questions” series with artists, we sat down with Goma‑born artist Yusubu Kasereka—son of a pastor—to explore his journey, inspirations, and aspirations.
A Wish for Peace
What is your greatest wish right now?
“As a young artist, I hope we can find a solution to end this war and the massacres in the eastern part of the country, especially here in Goma, so that we can feel safe and live in peace.”
From the outset, Yusubu places his art in the service of reconciliation. His heartfelt wish is simple yet profound: an end to violence so that every child can grow up without fear.
Pastor’s Son Turned Musician
What is it like to pursue music as the son of a pastor?
“I’m proud to be a pastor’s son, but you learn to juggle roles: sometimes I’m the pastor’s son, and other times I’m the artist.”
Raised in a devout household, Yusubu balances spiritual expectations with creative freedom. Rather than a conflict, this dual identity has been his greatest strength.
Musical Roots at Home
What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
“We listened mostly to Christian music, but also country and jazz, with plenty of improvisation—which prepared me to create my own blend of folk‑jazz‑rumba.”
Between hymns and jazz riffs, Yusubu absorbed a diverse palette of sounds that now define his unique fusion style.
“Chuki”: The Song of Everyday Life

Which song means the most to you, and why?
“’Chuki’ resonates with me deeply because it’s inspired by a real conflict I had with a family member. I hoped the song would become a bridge—an olive branch—for anyone facing something similar.”
With “Chuki,” Yusubu transforms personal struggle into a universal message of healing and understanding.
The Weight of “Samsoni”
How do you feel about people calling you “Samsoni”?
“They call me Samsoni because it’s the album title. Honestly, I’m a bit intimidated by that name—it carries the huge responsibility of embodying Samson’s strength and energy.”
Inspired by the biblical hero, Yusubu understands that to wear the name is to stand as a protector of his community.
A Symbolic Hairstyle
Is your hairstyle just to look like Samson?
“No—my long hair isn’t for imitation but to symbolize Samson’s personality: his power, energy, and dedication to defending his people.”
His hairstyle becomes a visual emblem of resilience, reminding listeners of the strength he represents.
Why PlayMB
Why did you choose PlayMB?
“I chose PlayMB because it’s a sales platform built by the organization that produced the album, and it supports artists financially. I trust PlayMB—that’s what matters most.”
By partnering with PlayMB, Yusubu endorses a fair-trade model where artists retain the lion’s share of their earnings.
Conclusion
Yusubu Kasereka’s story is one of faith, hope, and social commitment. Through his music, he channels the spirit of Goma’s resilience, turning personal and collective challenges into powerful art.
